175th Celebration

On Saturday, January 13th, 2024 ISVI celebrated 175 years.  

 

Established in 1849: 
The school was founded as the Illinois Institution for the Education of the Blind in Jacksonville, Illinois. It was the first institution of its kind in the state, aimed at providing specialized education for blind and visually impaired students.
 
 
Name Changes: 
Over the years, the school underwent several name changes: it became known as the Illinois School for the Blind in 1905, then the Illinois Braille and Sight Saving School in 1954, and finally adopted its current name, the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, in 1976.
 
 
 

Expansion of Services: 

Initially focused on education, ISVI expanded its services to include resources for individuals up to age 21, providing a comprehensive educational experience that includes vocational training and independent living skills.

 

 

 

Historical Challenges: 
The school faced challenges, including a significant fire in 1869 that destroyed the original building. However, it was rebuilt and continued to serve its mission.

 

 
Notable Visitors: 
The school has hosted notable figures, including Helen Keller, who visited in 1915, highlighting its importance in the field of education for the visually impaired.
